Gold-Coast Travels and Expeditions-Panama
was founded in November 1999 by Skip and Jill Berger.
The newly formed company includes Jill Paulson Berger, Cristobal High School 1975, Florida State University alumni and a fourth generation Zonian with Canal Zone roots that go back one hundred years. Engelbert Skip Berger came to Panama with his family in 1956 when his father was assigned to Fort Gulick 549th Military Police as a lawyer with the Judge Advocate Group. Later, after retirement, he practiced law for twenty years in the Canal Zone courts.
Jill¹s Great Grandfather, Frank Shay, came to the Isthmus in 1903 as an engineer on the Panama Railroad and was joined by his wife and daughter in 1907 when the working/living conditions began to gradually improve. Jill¹s Grandmother Shay came back to Panama in 1917 where she met and married Walter White in 1920. Three years later Jill¹s mother, Mary Jane White, who was born and raised in the CZ, met and married Leigh C Paulson, brought him back to Panama to live and raise six children on town sights located on both the Pacific and Atlantic sides of the Isthmus. Leigh Cash Paulson retired in 1978 as the last American Mt. Hope Supply Division Manager.
Ultimately, between adventures to the outside world, including Peace Corps service in Afghanistan and Venezuela, Skip returned home to Panama working another 19 years for the U.S. Government as the military Youth Sports Director in Fort Gulick and as a Recreation Specialist in Fort Sherman, fulfilling his ultimate goal to live and remain in Panama.
Son, Joseph Lane Berger, fifth generation Zonie, presently is in the eight grade attending a local International Bilingual School located in Margarita. His position in the company is the official kayak washer with visions of moving up. He also works on occasions part time with the Embera Indians as a translator for handicraft sales.
